The Swiss graphics managed to cause a stir beyond the national borders in the second half of the 20th century. Swiss Design and Swiss Style became internationally recognised seal of approval for qualitatively groundbreaking graphic design, which visually shaped an entire epoch with precision, objectivity and reduction - and became a Swiss export hit with innovative work. The Basel training model of the General Business School, later school for design, was an important pioneer for the international breakthrough of the new Swiss graphics. Strict but undogmatic views, a pragmatic attitude towards design questions, courage to experiment and a clear commitment to modernity triggered a broad graphic movement from Basel, which ranges from Europe to the USA. Dorothea Hofmann tells the story of Swiss graphics from a new perspective. By deliberately focusing on Basel, she draws the differentiated picture of a national graphic movement, which in its complexity bursts the tight corset of the Zurich constructive-concrete direction, with which Swiss style is generally equated to today. The author deals intensively with the origins that date back to the 19th century, deals with the development of graphic education in Switzerland and conclusively signs the breakthrough to an international style. At the centre of the book are former teachers and students of the General Business School Basel, who have contributed significantly to the international reputation of Swiss Design with their works: Hermann Eidenbenz, Emil Ruder, Armin Hofmann, Karl Gerstner, Gérard Ifert, Nelly Rudin, Pierre Mendell, Wolfgang Weingart, Kenneth Hiebert, Del. Friedman, Apr4 il Greiman and many more.
